Laser Acne Scar Removal

Smoothbeam acne laser therapy, a breakthrough in acne treatment, can clear acne and keep it from returning with a series of treatments.   It also treats scarring that results from acne.

This gentle, safe treatment uses a laser to target overactive sebaceous glands in your skin – the root cause of acne. Medical lasers such as Smoothbeam are safe and have been used for over 20 years to treat many medical and cosmetic skin conditions.

Are lasers safe for my skin? What are the long-term effects?

Lasers used in medicine are quite safe and are very precise instruments, enabling physicians to target structures they otherwise could not access. Lasers, like Candela Smoothbeam, have revolutionized many common dermatological procedures.

Candela Smoothbeam Laser, in particular, is such a safe laser that it is commonly used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes.

What will the laser treatment be like?

Laser Acne Treatments

You and your practitioner will wear protective eyewear during the short laser treatment. A small handpiece delivers the laser pulses to your skin along with a small spray of coolant in conjunction with each laser pulse that protects the upper layer of the skin.

Most patients report the procedure to be “mild” with little more than a slight snapping or stinging sensation like a rubber band.

How does Smoothbeam acne laser therapy work?

Over 80% of your skin is made up of water. Smoothbeam emits a wavelength of light that is strongly absorbed by water in your skin. As the laser penetrates into the skin, heat is generated in and around the sebaceous glands in the upper layers of your skin which creates a mild thermal injury that changes the structure and function of the glands. Shortly after the first treatment you will start to see a reduction in the number of acne lesions on your skin.

The sebaceous glands are the source of bacterial growth,

oiliness, and inflammation in the skin.  These factors combine

to produce pimples, pustules, blackheads and cysts.  By

permanently shrinking these glands, acne can be significantly

diminished.

Smoothbeam also stimulates collagen production, improving

many acne scars and even wrinkles.

Do I need to pretreat my skin before the

Smoothbeam acne laser treatment?

You should avoid sun exposure for two weeks before and

after the laser procedure. Your skin should be thoroughly cleansed to remove any makeup, creams or oils on its surface before the laser procedure. If you require a topical anesthetic, it should be applied in advance of the treatment. Consult with your practitioner on whether this is needed.

How should I care for my skin after treatment?

Mild redness is usually seen immediately after the procedure and typically subsides within a

day.  After laser treatment, avoid rigorous scrubbing of the treated area.  Cleanse the treated

area gently.  Be sure to avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen during the course of

your treatment.

How many times do I have to return for treatment?

In most cases, three to four treatments, 3-5 weeks apart are required for best results. Many people report over 90% clearing of acne lesions after four treatments done once per month.  Most of these people have remained free of significant acne for over two years.
