From early on, we learn that having a smooth, clear complexion is an attribute of physical attractiveness. However, as we
age, maintaining that healthy glow becomes more difficult.
The chemical peel is one of the oldest cosmetic procedures in the world, and was performed in ancient Egypt, Greece, and
Rome to help people achieve smoother, more beautiful skin. Today, chemical facial peels are popular because they offer
nearly immediate results and can be performed as an outpatient procedure. If you want to reduce or eliminate the appearance of
fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, and uneven pigmentation, Wellness Evolution has a variety of Chemical Peels from which you
can choose.
What is a cosmetic peel?
The Glycolic Peel is a safe and painless exfoliation process that removes a micro-thin top layer of skin. This form of skin
rejuvenation uses glycolic acid to remove damaged cells on the top layer of skin. Removal of damaged cells stimulates cell
division that results in plumper, healthier young cells.
The Glycolic Peel procedure smoothes and softens the skin, diminishes fine lines, decreases acne outbreaks, evens out
coloration and lightens hyperpigmented areas. Studies have shown that continued use of glycolic exfoliation may speed
up cell turnover and stimulate the production of collagen (the protein fiber that keeps skin from sagging and wrinkling).
A glycolic-acid peel can also be referred to as the "lunchtime" peel. This light peel or superficial peel is administered by a
physician or aesthetician. They swab on a solution that boosts your skin's softness, smoothness, freshness and dewiness.
If you're acne-prone, salicylic acid (a pore purging cousin to glycolic acid) may be used instead. Either way, this fruit-acid
derived peel exfoliates dead cells, a process that already occurs naturally but slows down with age and sun damage. When
these cells become stacked up, they can make skin look dull and lead to blocked pores and breakouts.
Glycolic peels typically cost from $50-$125 each, depending on the spa or doctor's office you visit and the percent of concentration
in the acid.
Peels may involve some slight stinging or tingling but can be performed safely on practically all skin types.
Who is a candidate?
People with:
- Superficial wrinkles of the face, neck, upper chest and arms
- Uneven pigmentation
- Enlarged facial pores
- Superficial acne scars of the face
- Age spots
What are the intended results?
Smoother, youthful skin that is more uniform in color. Advantages are that it works to stimulate cell turnover (bringing fresh,
healthy cells up to the surface), and in the case of acne is also mildly antibacterial. It stimulates collagen production, increases
your skin's ability to produce and retain moisture, and smoothes skin's texture overall. Results don't come from just one though,
its best to do a series of 6-12, depending on the condition you're treating.
What is the healing process?
You will be sent home with specific instructions. In most cases, you can resume public activities right away and almost always
by the following day. Some dryness, flakiness and redness should be expected, as the top layer of skin falls away to reveal
the smoother, healthier skin beneath.
